1)

It's a STEERING RACK from a car that has "rack-and-pinion steering. It is incomplete. There should another casting on the left end, with a rubber bellows and a tie-rod. It is a MANUAL RACK, not a POWER steering rack. The aluminum casting bolts to the car frame, the tie-rods go to the steering spindles. The small splined shaft is connected to the steering wheel by a small shaft with U-joints.
